playdate

today i had my first playdate in poland :) there was no way i was going to spend another week here without meeting people i can communicate with. so i called up this woman who i connected to while i was in the U.S.



it was interesting, a whole new world - it seems like most expats in europe just move from one european county to another. their first question was "where were you before krakow?" assuming that i've lived elsewhere as an expat. i met a group of cool european women - dutch, swiss, german and belgian. i surprising felt comfortable and was making inappropriate comments right away :P just kidding, i was on my best behavior - as for ethan, that's another story. dutch boys took a great liking to ethan and played with him the whole time.


i ask them "so do you guys speak polish now?" - they all looked at each other and started to crack up. i was so puzzled. then one of them said "everyone tries in the beginning, but it's a horrible language to learn - we all gave up." then another woman who's been here 5! years said "i didn't even try - all you have to know is hello, bye, thank you, your numbers and i don't speak polish" - wow, i'm half way there. so i was strangely comforted knowing that you can like a country without learning the language. good thing.

i found out that they collect garbage EVERY OTHER WEEK. and most households seem to have one european size garbage can - what's up with that? do they not produce as much crap or do they bury them in their backyard? so we ordered another garbage can and i'm making joe take a grocery bag of biodegradable garbage everyday to work. at least we have some routine down.

i just got a word that we will be getting high speed internet soon! whoo-hoo - that means we can set up our desktop and post some pictures! yay.
